Ashamed of your outdated old mobile? SWAP.it!

Posting Date Posted on 30th July 2007 at 21:01Tags Tagged under Mobile Phones

Ashamed of your outdated old mobile? SWAP.it!"Your phone's only got Bluetooth and a dozen polyphonic ringtones? Well look at this, mine's got 3G, wi-fi, pie-in-the-sky, fifty megapixel camera, and fully enabled toast capabilities. And I only needed to remortgage the flat to buy it." Sound all too familiar? We sympathise. It's ridiculously hard and expensive to keep up with the latest mobile trends these days - that contract phone that looked so appealing nine months ago is probably already outdated by a newer, faster, more glorious model. So if you haven't got the latest Golden Fallace 3000, the Carphone Warehouse is here to help, with their new SWAP.it service.

Does the offer of a new phone halfway through your mobile contract sound appealing? Thought so, and that's exactly what the Carphone Warehouse is offering. You no longer need to be ashamed of your technologically inferior phone, the brick that stays tucked away in your back pocket when around friends. Basically you sign up for a mobile contract which includes a free phone, and then nine months later, you get another phone - absolutely free!

But where's the catch, I hear you ask. Well as far as we can see, there is none. All you have to do is sign up for an 18 month contract or choose a tariff that is £35 or above, then you can just go back to the Carphone Warehouse 9 months later and swap your handset for a brand spanking new one. And you're not stuck with the crumby handsets and mobile operators - there's a wide choice of SWAP.it handsets including Blackberry, Samsung, Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones, and SWAP.it can be taken advantage of with O2, T-Mobile and Orange.

Of course like all things in this world, you get what you pay for. The more you pay, the better the handset you receive at the beginning of your contract, and the greater choice of handsets you have to swap to nine months later. Dependant upon the amount you pay per month, you are placed into either the bronze, silver or gold tier, the latter having the greatest choice of phones to swap to. However you only need spend £50 per month to get into this top tier, and £40 per month to get into the silver tier. The contracts themselves are also great value, with a huge amount of free minutes and free texts up for grabs.

So if you're paranoid about your current phone, just want a change, or are one of these people who need to keep up with the latest mobile technology, the Carphone Warehouse's SWAP.it service is for you. And if you're already paying over £35 per month on your current contract, there's no reason not to take advantage of this great deal.

The $2,000,000 Board Game

Posting Date Posted on 27th July 2007 at 14:53Tags Tagged under Toys & Games

The $2,000,000 Board GameIt's common consensus that board games are exactly that - boring. However, what about a board game that could win you money? We've always dreamt about the Deal or No Deal game you were given for Christmas being real, or the Who Wants to be a Millionaire playstation game feeding the one million pounds you just won out of a slot in the side. Well let's think bigger than that, what about a board game that could win you millions - two million dollars to be exact? Well it's a dream no longer, because Eternity II is here to boggle your mind and fill your wallet, courtesy of gadget store Firebox and famous online retailer Amazon.

It's the one maths equation you never learnt back at school - 256 square puzzle pieces + one clever person = two million dollars. It sounds easy, but as the name Eternity II suggests, the board game may require a bit more skill than picking random boxes or moving your piece down a snake. The vexing geometric puzzle took ages for the designers at Tomy to create, and the last board game they made - no prizes for guessing that one's name - was only cracked by some eggheads from Cambridge University back in 2000. But don't let that put you off, according to it's creator Christopher Monckton, Eternity II is just as likely to be solved by a five year old as a mathematical genius. So you've got a chance of being in the lolly even if your name's not Stephen Fry.

Unlike most puzzles, Eternity II has thousands of different solutions. However that doesn't make it any easier, and the knowledge of that is likely to have you down the nearest rehab clinic quicker than Pete Doherty when you spend hours trying to find just one solution. But don't worry, help is at hand. There will be two further 'clue' puzzles that complete the Eternity II range, and by solving these you will receive the locations of key pieces in the main puzzle, getting you even closer to the big prize.

The best thing about this board game, is that it hasn't even been released yet. Eternity II is released on the 28th of July (tommorow!), so by ordering today you'll have a head-start over those who buy it later on. This prior knowledge could make the difference between winning and losing that huge cash amount.

So buy Eternity II today, it's only £9.99 plus delivery at Amazon or £34.95 plus delivery at Firebox. It might be the best £9.99 you've ever spent, and I mean, it's only 256 square pieces of cardboard - how hard can it be?

See some Sky this Summer

Posting Date Posted on 25th July 2007 at 21:23Tags Tagged under Entertainment

See some Sky this SummerIf you're fed up of staring at dank, grey cloud this summer, we here at Shopping Place can help. No, we haven't got some super neutron machine we borrowed from James Bond that can melt away the clouds (that's for later), but we can at least help you to see some sky. Unfortunately we're not talking about the blue, natural stuff, but something just as good all the same. Sky is here to entertain you this summer, with their excellent mix of TV, broadband, and phone. And it's not as expensive as you might think.

Sky TV used to be reserved for the upper class in society, the people who could spare a bit of money aside each month for the luxury of multi-channel TV. However in recent years, Sky has become more and more accessible to the masses. You can now get all three products - TV, broadband, and phone - for an amazing £26 a month. That's the equivalent of a packet of cigarettes a week, and Sky hasn't yet been scientifically proven to kill you (as far as we know).

"26 pounds," I hear you say, "I bet that'll only get me the cheapo, basic version of Sky!". But there you are wrong. The £26 a month gives you all the Sky channels, except for the Sports and Movie channels which you can pay a small fee to upgrade to include. You also get free UK weekend and evening calls, and up to 8Mb broadband with a huge 40GB per month usage allowance (equal to over 800 music albums). All aspects of the see, speak and surf offer are upgradeable and downgradeable, meaning you could end up paying even less than £26 a month. Sky are even kind enough to lob in their standard Sky box for absolutely free, but you can upgrade to the infamous Sky+ box for a one off fee of £99, or to the new Sky HD box for a one off fee of £299 and an additional monthly fee of a tenner. Cheap as chips.

The benefits of Sky are innumerable, far too many to list on this page. It might be the best £26 a month you ever spend, you could live your life through the power of the Sky box, never to leave your couch again. Let us explain.

You wake up at eight in the morning, realising that you fell asleep on the sofa the previous night munching on a packet of Doritos watching Lost. No problem, you scrunch up the half-eaten packet and lob it in the bin. Realising that you fortunately recorded the episode, you turn on the Sky+ box and resume where you left off. At about eleven following a morning of Bones on Sky One, you decide it's time to fit out your house with some new furniture. You browse to Sky Active, and order everything. From a new toaster to a new desk, it's all at your fingertips. Come one o'clock following all that shopping, you start feeling peckish. Again you browse to Sky Active, and order a pizza from Dominos. It gets delivered a short time later, and you tuck in whilst guiltily watching the Disney Channel. You join in with an interactive vote - who would win in a fight, Tigger or Pooh?

In the afternoon, you feel quite lonely, and so decide to use Sky TV's dating service to have a bit of a flirt with someone from the opposite sex in Aberdeen. You later find out they're actually someone of your own sex. In the evening you laugh at the new series of The Simpsons, and inform yourself with Decoding the Past, before settling down to watch the big mid-week Premiership match on Sky Sports. You place a bet with your remote through SkyBet whilst the two teams are battling it out, and cheer loudly when your backed team wins. Receiving the prize money, you realise that you have enough money to pay for Sky for the year, and can do the whole thing again tomorrow.

So while we wouldn't recommend it, it probably is possible to survive with nothing more than a Sky box and a couch (if you like pizza a lot). Good news is that with the new technology coming along, you'll be able to book yourself in for a GP's appointment when you've become too fat to leave the house.

So whatever you choose to do with it, we reckon Sky's deal of broadband, TV, and phone for only £26 a month is one of the best deals around, and definitely something to pick up on whilst it lasts.

Stand Under my Umbrella

Posting Date Posted on 23rd July 2007 at 21:33Tags Tagged under Clothing

Stand Under my UmbrellaYou couldn't make it up. Another British summer, another torrential downpour of rain. Mother nature seems to have taken a sudden vicious turn, throwing hail and violent lightning storms at us too. Apart from leaving the country the bad weather seems unavoidable, tomorrow is supposed to be our 'only' day of Summer. But you don't have to leave yourself exposed to the elements, John Lewis and Harrods have some great offers on the businessman's essential tool - the humble umbrella.

Widespread flooding, caravans floating downstream, the only people who seem to be benefitting from this recent spell of appauling weather seems to be the boat owners, who now have a brand new playground consisting of the most part of central and northern England. The bad weather's coming to get you, but is your old battered umbrella up to the job?

The idea of an umbrella is simple yet brilliant. A piece of coloured canvas stretched over a metal frame, a contraption that is able to be extended and contracted whilst painfully getting your finger caught in the catch. The umbrella stands above you as you go about your daily business, keeping you dry and retaining your hair-doo. It's an essential accessory for everyone, and if you need a new one, fortunately John Lewis and Harrods have the answer.

There is a wide variety of umbrellas to choose from at both stores, ranging in price from a pocket-money £10 all the way up to an eye-watering £100. So whether you're Jade Goody or the Queen, there's the umbrella to suit you. Lots of the umbrellas on offer have been professionally designed, and wouldn't look out of place in the Tate Modern. You can choose from subtle greens up to luminescent pinks and yellows, depending on your own style and sanity.

So don't delay, get your new umbrella from John Lewis or Harrods today! You could even sing along to the number one hit song by Rihanna whilst you buy it.

Remote Control Indoor Helicopter for under £25

Posting Date Posted on 22nd July 2007 at 21:11Tags Tagged under Gifts & Gadgets and Toys & Games

Remote Control Indoor Helicopter for under £25Remote control planes and helicopters used to be restricted to those who had the time to build one and a back garden big enough to accomodate one. However thanks to Firebox, you can get your hands on a PicoZ Micro Remote Control Helicopter that you can use from the comfort of your own couch. And best of all, it won't cause your bank account to crash land.

At only 17cm long and weighing in at a measly 10g, the PicoZ Micro Helicopter is ready to fly straight out of the box. No faffing around with fiddly screws or a never-ending sea of bolts, only to find you're missing half the pieces. Despite its size the PicoZ won't fall apart, as it's made from the finest polypropylene foam. You don't even have to leave the comfort of your cosy chair to fly it, as the PicoZ works both inside and out, so is an ideal distraction whilst the unseasonal rain continues to pour through this typically British summer.

The PicoZ is controlled by a wide-beam IR transmitter (the same technology that's in your TV remote) which also doubles up as a charger once your helicopter has run out of juice. Because it's so light, you can have up to 10 minutes flying fun from only a half hour charge. The controller has a massive range of 30 feet, enough to frighten people in the furthest corners of your house. And you won't need a pilot's license to control it, because the PicoZ has excellent manouverability due to it's auto-stability system. With the incorporated tri-band technology, you could even fly three at the same time (if you had enough hands).

The PicoZ Micro Helicopter is available now at Firebox for a titchy £19.95 plus £3.95 delivery, and because of the addiction factor, is bound to sell out fast!
